A Pure Conscience

#13) “A good conscience is a continual Christmas.” – Benjamin Franklin
As a Christian, I believe that the center of man’s being (heart) and the conscience of man can not be separated. Listen to how Augustus Hopkins Strong, Systematic Theology defines the conscience, “Not only does sin, as unlikeness to the divine purity, involve pollution, – it also, as antagonism to God’s holy will, involves guilt. While guilt is primarily a reaction to God, there is also a secondary reaction in one’s conscience.” Strong reports: “Progress in sin is marked by a diminished sensitiveness of moral insight and feeling. As the greatest of sins is to be conscious of none, so guilt may be great, just in proportion to the absence of consciousness of it.”
This is why we get that sinking feeling inside of us when we do wrong, or, when we are doing right, we have a peaceful feeling inside of us. Our conscience and heart cannot be separated, they go hand in hand, as our conscience is an indicator of our hearts condition: it is our spiritual barometer for how our hearts are doing. Another way to look at this is by viewing our conscience like a mirror, it reflects the heart of a person. If we do not take care of our heart and obey its promptings, we will sear our conscience.
Hebrews 13:18 KJV “Pray for us: for we trust we have a good conscience, in all things willing to live honestly.”
Titus 1:15 NKJV “To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled.”
The Bible says that our conscience can be good, bad, clear, defiled, clean, or corrupt. To have a continual Christmas we must keep our conscience pure: I believe this is what Benjamin Franklin was getting at. As Christmas is to be a time of year where peace and joy fill our hearts, make it a practice this year to be quick to forgive and quick to repent. By doing this, we will keep our conscience full of peace and away from from the contamination of sin.
Grace and Peace,
