Quotes About Christmas

The Heart of Christmas

#17) “Christmas is a necessity. There has to be at least one day of the year to remind us that we’re here for something else besides ourselves.” – Eric Sevareid, CBS News journalist

As you read this quote about Christmas, what grabs your attention? At first glance, it may sound noble to you and I. But, does it truly capture the meaning of Christmas – does it capture the meaning of Christ?

Eric says, “there has to be at least one day a year to think about others.” While the idea here is not necessarily bad and I am sure he had good intentions, why only one day out of 365?  Christmas is about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who gave himself away every day He lived on this earth! There is truth in this quote, but it is a secular truth – not a Christian truth.

If one takes the perspective of Eric’s quote as truth, then it is no wonder why our world is messed up and self-serving.

Jesus said, “we are to take up our cross.”  That means we carry the needs of others, first, which is not always an easy thing to do. If you don’t feel the weight and discomfort of your decisions, it isn’t a real cross that you carry.

Christmas should remind us to think about others, but I want to encourage you to live for others every day in 2017.  How do you and I do that? It is easy, and everyone likes easy! Simply touch one person’s life each day – open a door, pay for someone’s groceries, do the dishes, say I love you, give a compliment, etc. Looking for opportunities every day to live for others is what makes all the difference in this world.

I hope you have a wonderful day!
